Windows Central reports that Microsoft’s newest 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, which were recently shown off at the Snapdragon Summit, meet the hardware requirements for the Copilot+ PC flagship… but neither of them flaunt it.
Microsoft’s Surface boss Brett Ostrom says the two devices will not be called Copilot+ devices, which would be an odd move if Microsoft intended to continue pushing the label.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm senior vice president of computing and gaming Kedar Kondap reportedly told Windows Central that the Copilot+ PC flagship is unlikely to be used in the future.
The writing has been on the wall for a while now. Windows 11’s Copilot+ AI features were never well received, resembling early tech demos when they were first released and new advancements that failed to catch on. A year after debuting, we explored all the ways Copilot+ PCs still needed to improve for the movement to succeed. That didn’t happen at all.
Late last year, Microsoft was apparently pushing all Windows 11 PCs to become AI PCs, regardless of whether or not they qualified as Copilot+ PCs. Then, earlier this year, Microsoft thought deeply and came to the conclusion that perhaps the right step is to backtrack on its AI ambitions in Windows 11 and reduce AI integration. To add insult to injury, reports suggest that no one is using Microsoft’s Copilot AI.
Put it all together, it seems almost inevitable that Copilot+ will disappear, if not this year, then next.
