“Touch” is not in the name because it is not the most important new feature of the new MacBook Pro. In fact, Apple has a link to a whitepaper about the PROLED display on the product website, and Touch is not mentioned at all. I think it’s him least important feature, and there are other aspects of the laptop that are more important and have implications for other MacBooks in the future.
OLED takes the lead
The screen is the most important feature, but not because of the touch, but because it is a tandem OLED display that can “deliver the kind of visual fidelity that professionals have been dreaming of,” according to Apple. Considering Apple’s long history of producing top-quality laptop displays, I’m inclined to believe that claim.
Apple
Look at these specifications. Is this on a laptop? Curse.
- 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio
- XDR Brightness: Up to 1000 nits sustained in full screen; Maximum of 2000 nits (HDR content only)
- SDR Brightness: Up to 1000 nits sustained in full screen; Maximum of 2000 nits (outdoor)
- ProMotion Adaptive Refresh Rates
- 1.00 percent reflectance, lower than traditional OLED displays
- P3 + Adobe RGB wide color gamut
- Apple Color Matching Features 2026
- Medical imaging support
That’s easily one of the best, if not the best screen ever placed on a laptop. Can a laptop screen be so attractive that you never want to take your eyes off it? If you can, count on Apple to make it happen.
What’s even more exciting is what it means for the rest of the MacBook line in the future. Several reports have said that OLED is coming to the MacBook Air, possibly in 2028, and while it probably won’t be on the same level as the MacBook Pro with PROLED display (consider the difference between the iPad mini and iPad Pro), it will still be a major upgrade from the current LED-backlit IPS panel.
Lighter design
A few days ago I was in the office with my 16-inch MacBook Pro in my backpack. I set my backpack on my desk and it landed with a thud. My coworker (a PC geek) was surprised. “What’s wrong with the stones in your bag?” he exclaimed
