In September, Microsoft released the optional preview update KB5124010, which caused issues with Windows 11’s built-in Dolby Digital AC-3 audio decoding. The bug caused some games and apps to crash when changing the volume or using certain audio features. In some cases, apps and games could not even be started.

Most programs were not affected as long as they relied on their own audio decoding components. But for anyone relying on the offerings built into Windows 11, Microsoft desperately needed a solution.
