Mario had his moment. Now it’s Zelda’s turn.

After The Super Mario movie and The Super Mario Galaxy movie made billions, zelda is headed to the big screen next April. So to keep the franchise front and center, Nintendo is generously remaking its 1998 classic. The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. The game debuts on November 5, two weeks before the meteoric arrival of Grand theft car VI – the only major release that dared to compete with it that month.

While other companies avoid grand theft car giant by avoiding the November release window, Nintendo’s healthy pullback is set to stand out against the dazzling violence of grand theft car. While many will play both games, the start of the holiday season offers a contrast: a family fantasy or a modern crime epic.

The protagonist Link appears before the Great Deku Tree with his fairy companion Navi.

Both are beautiful to look at. GTA’Netflix preview showed the obsessive photorealism developer Rockstar Games is known for. He Ocarina of time The remake, alternatively, maintains the cartoonish aesthetic of the original game but overlays it with intricate details.

First impressions

Your tunic is not just plain green; It is a mix of hand-embroidered fabrics and leathers. And fairies are not simple balls of light; They are furry creatures with mosaic wings. However, as someone who grew up with the original game and lost count of how many times I beat it, I found that the remake’s baroque environments could confuse as well as dazzle.

Nintendo gave me 90 minutes to play a representative sample of the game at a preview in New York City. I walked through the Kokiri forest, drinking in its dappled light and rippling waters. Then I ran through Hyrule Field. Although small by today’s gaming standards, it still felt as big as I remembered thanks to some clever atmospheric lighting. Castle Town was busier than ever, filled with banners, flowers, and colorful citizens. Even as I rushed to explore as much of the main plot as possible, I couldn’t help but stop to admire the scenery and shops of the town.

I was then sent to the Forest Temple, my favorite dungeon in the entire series. He was making good progress and was hoping to reach his final boss before my session ended. Unfortunately, I somehow missed a chest that contained the key I needed to progress. A Nintendo representative pointed me in the right direction, acknowledging that the rich details could overwhelm the eye and make it difficult to know exactly where to go next.

I dwell on the game’s aesthetic transformation because its mechanical changes are comparatively moderate. After all, why fix what isn’t broken? the original Ocarina of time He was a pioneer in 3D video games and established action mechanics that still reign in the industry. Modest updates came to the game when it was repackaged for the GameCube and 3DS. For Switch 2, Nintendo is applying a user interface reminiscent of 2017 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and a quest log in the pause menu called “Threads of Time.” It also adds movement features that I had almost forgotten were missing: a jump and a sprint.

I was so used to the auto jump that I couldn’t time this jump correctly when I encountered it in my own playthrough.

in the original Ocarina of timeYou would automatically jump when you ran across a ledge or gap. While you can choose to keep the old control scheme, the game now allows you to access command. It’s not very useful in combat, but I managed to jump to the roof of a cabin in the woods, which was only accessible via a winding path. don’t wait Breath of the wild frankness. The game still appears to be a linear adventure, it just now allows for the occasional vertical shortcut. Plus, you can hold down a button to run, a boon for those who constantly roll because it was faster than jogging.
