According to numerous reports, Apple’s Face ID system has been glitchy on new phones, failing to authenticate when unlocking and paying with Apple Pay, and then forcing the phones to reboot. In a seemingly separate issue, users also reported that touchscreens were randomly unresponsive. It now appears that both issues are related and will be fixed in next week’s software update.

Apple reduced the size of the Dynamic Island on the new phones by moving the infrared camera below the screen, so we initially wondered if the problem could be hardware related. While that remains the case for some users, Apple seems confident that it will fix most of the issues through a software update.

This isn’t the first time Apple has needed to implement a fix for early problems with new phones, nor is it the first time a new phone has had touchscreen issues. Notably, in 2020, Apple issued a display module replacement program for iPhone 11 phones that had unresponsive touchscreens.
