“It has become increasingly difficult for the average human eye to distinguish between real and AI-generated photographs,” said Andrey Doronichev, CEO and co-founder of optica.xyza website that allows you to upload images to detect whether they have been generated with AI or not. “This has the potential to manipulate public opinion, undermine the credibility of news sources, and ultimately threaten the democratic process by promoting misinformation.”
Optics is one of many tools that have emerged in recent months in response to the rise of AI-generated images on the Internet. However, none of these tools, including Optic, are foolproof. You can also try to recognize if an image is generated by AI by searching weird fingers either failed faces. Finally, if the image seems too good to be true, it probably is.
AI-generated images also run counter to the manipulated media policies of platforms like Twitter, but experts said the platforms do not consistently enforce these policies.
“As there has been a recent rise in AI-generated media, it has become clear that platforms are not prepared for this moment when fake images and misinformation could cause real-world harm,” Kayla Gogarty, deputy director of research at Media Matters for America, a nonprofit media watchdog, told BuzzFeed News. “Particularly concerning is Twitter, as Elon Musk has abandoned much of the platform’s content moderation and it has become difficult to determine the credibility of the account under the new checkmark policy.”
