New instructions discovered in Claude Code instruct Claude models not to “create a recreation of a specific existing game,” even if the user suggests a new name or claims the game is original.
The new Claude Code system message, first spotted by a user on X, was later confirmed by a member of the Claude Code development team.
“Create original games, games from a genre, and games from the user’s own designs and assets,” says Claude Code’s message. “Do not create a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called the original.”
“Is this the end of game rewrites, mods, and everything else?” asked the X user who highlighted Claude’s new instructions.
Addy Osmani, a former Google Chrome engineer now working at Anthropic, responded that Claude Code’s revised message is intended to “prevent someone else’s specific game from being recreated because using Claude to infringe intellectual property is against our usage policy.”
Osmani noted that “original games, genre games, and games created from their own designs and assets are meant to continue working,” adding “if Claude rejects something that is his, send it to me.”
