Apple has gone to great lengths to minimize the visibility of the crease on the iPhone Duo, including multiple shifting display layers and a matte nano-texture surface that reduces glare and makes the crease less visible. But physics is what it is and you can’t fold and unfold a screen thousands of times without any formation of visible folds. The good news is that Apple has another solution to help mitigate this: a replaceable outer shell.
Speaking to @angietutorials on TikTok, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron said: “The matte layer does a very good job, I will say minimizing creasing, but there is a covering layer on top and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help it wear down as much as possible, to make sure we get the most performance out of that layer. It’s actually replaceable, which is really nice for the customer, who can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
