Following reports of iPhone Duos with broken and cracked interior screens, often showing a shiny line running from the center to the right side, Apple says in a statement to Bloomberg and 9to5Mac that it is aware of “an issue affecting the internal display” on a “small number of iPhone Duo units.” If your iPhone Duo is affected, Apple instructs you to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Here’s the full statement, which Apple’s Alex Kirschner shared with The edge:
The response to the iPhone Duo from early adopters has been incredibly positive, and we’re seeing interesting things from developers who are quickly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue affecting the internal display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo screen, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Kirshner says that most drives are not susceptible and that problems appear quickly on drives with the defect.
Shortly after launch, iPhone Duo users began reporting similar issues where the hinge would get tight and opening the device would result in a crack and the distinctive glowing lines on the screen. One user in Australia said an Apple Store replaced his unit “on the spot.”
This weekend, iFixit published its teardown of the phone and gave its perspective on why some phones might be failing. Where the damage occurred, iFixit shows how the foldable screen could be pushing against a center bar.
The edge has contacted Apple about the reports, but has not received an official response about the problems with these new phones. They are some of the first devices to be launched after new CEO John Ternus replaced Tim Cook.
