Just for a quick comparison, the Pi 5 launched in 2023 with the 4GB variant starting at $60. The 16GB version debuted in January 2025 for just $120. It is now more than 300 percent more expensive, almost entirely due to memory price increases. The various models are also experiencing shortages, with the usual resale problems.
Upton says the latest price increases are due to a lack of alternatives, but that the current outlook is “ultimately temporary.” “We expect to reverse our price increases when memory costs fall once again.” Here is the hope.
