Calendar invite attacks are dangerous because you don’t expect them and your curiosity gets the better of you. Scammers may send fake meeting invitations and/or insert messages about missed calls, unpaid bills, or subscriptions that need to be renewed. Invitations can also have malicious links embedded, which simply ask to be clicked.

And that’s the point. Scammers want you to open links, call numbers, and visit websites. By doing so, you may end up entering your passwords or payment details on copycat sites, downloading files with malware, or handing over personal information to a fake on the other end.

In some cases, fake Google Drive links and AI-generated voices have also been used to make fraudulent invitations seem more credible.

what should you do

One of the reasons this method works is because calendar invites are often perceived as more legitimate than simple emails. Additionally, some calendar apps automatically display invitations that have not yet been accepted.

To minimize the risk of becoming a victim, security experts recommend examining all unexpected calendar events as carefully as you would unexpected emails. Avoid opening links or calling phone numbers included in calendar invites from unknown senders.

You may also want to review your calendar app settings and change any automatic behavior for incoming invitations.
