Is Apple compatible with my iPad?
Fully supported iPads can run the latest version of iPadOS, currently iPadOS 27.
Apple’s iPadOS 27 compatibility list includes the fourth-generation 12.9-inch Pro, second-generation 11-inch Pro, fourth-generation Air, ninth-generation iPad, and sixth-generation mini.
Unfortunately, iPadOS 27 stopped supporting:
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
- iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)
- iPad Air (3rd generation)
- iPad (8th generation)
- iPad mini (5th generation)
However, those models have not been abandoned. Apple released iPadOS 26.7 on September 14 and iPadOS 26.7.1 on September 28 for iPads that can’t upgrade to iPadOS 27.
Older models that cannot run the latest version may continue to receive security updates for several years. However, once Apple stops providing security patches, users may encounter increasing security risks and app compatibility issues.
Apple may continue to provide security updates for devices that can no longer run the latest iPadOS for several years. For example, the seventh-generation iPad still receives iPadOS 18 security updates, and iPadOS 18.7.10 was released on August 17, 2026. The second-generation iPad Pro and sixth-generation iPad run iPadOS 17, which was updated to version 17.7.11 in May 2026. Apple also released security updates for iPadOS 16 and iPadOS 15 at the same time.
Apple doesn’t promise how long it will keep each previous version of iPadOS. The arrival of iPadOS 27 has already changed the support landscape: iPadOS 26 remains compatible with devices that cannot update to iPadOS 27, while the seventh-generation iPad remains on the security branch of iPadOS 18. If your iPad can no longer run the latest version of iPadOS and is no longer receiving security updates, it is nearing the end of its practical lifespan.
