Reddit user pdfu found clues hidden in the HomeView 27.2 code that Apple could be adding security camera features to its smart home hub. The strings describe a security camera mode with motion detection, live streaming and recording options, as well as privacy features. According to pdfu, there is a settings page that even explicitly says: “Your HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video.”

The video feeds will supposedly only be visible to members of the household, and will display an indicator light and play a sound when someone is watching the camera or when it starts recording. Household members will also receive a notification whenever the safe video mode settings are changed. It will also include customizable options for what to detect, stream, or record, depending on whether you’re home, away, or sleeping.

Some wondered why Apple didn’t allow HomeView to function as a security camera at launch, and the company hasn’t said anything to suggest the features will be available. But considering how central privacy is to Apple’s marketing, the company may be waiting to tweak those features before launch.
