Another trick that I’m not sure how Samsung pulled off is keeping the P9 almost cool to the touch during long writes. Despite the lack of a massive heatsink, fins, or fan (it’s comparatively small), many other 40Gbps SSDs have it. I asked about the power demands of the NAND and controller, but got no response. When I do I will add the information.
While it wasn’t the fastest USB4 SSD I’ve tested overall, the other features described directly above, as well as the small, pocket-friendly size, make it probably the most attractive USB4 SSD to pass through our portals. Good Samsung!
How much does the Samsung P9 cost?
The short, like all SSD storage today, a lot. The P9 costs $340 for 1TB, $650 for 2TB, $1,440 for 4TB, and $2,880 for 8TB. That’s according to prices on Samsung’s site, which currently shows all models as “Sold Out.” Don’t be discouraged, Amazon has the 2TB version available at the time of writing.
Those figures average about $350 per terabyte. The market is still in flux, so prices may change (probably upwards), although Samsung generally supplies its own NAND.
